Hungary is a popular destination, and people visit for more than just its excellent cuisine. The dominant feature of the land of paprika and goulash are the Hungarian thermal baths. Dozens of spas and lidos draw water from underground springs. Among them, the modernised Rába Quelle Győr Thermal Spa certainly stands out.

The newly reconstructed spa has high ambitions. Its owner introduced his own spa rating system, which he aims to expand across all European spas. The scale should function similarly to hotel stars. How does the Győr thermal spa in Hungary fare in our rating?

Newly Reconstructed Győr Thermal Baths

The brand new water park opened to visitors in June 2023. Its dominant feature will be the world’s largest soda maker. The 32-meter-high slide tower, shaped like a siphon, references the inventor of the soda maker, Ányos Jedlik, who died in Győr.

The reconstruction set high goals. The area increased from 7,000 m2 to 11,000 m2, and attractions include a two-storey children’s kingdom. The design of the sauna world and pools also underwent renewal. The management plans to build the largest summer cinema in Hungary in the future.

What Ailments Does the Győr Thermal Spa Treat?

The Győr thermal bath is primarily designed for active relaxation. Alongside this, however, there are many sunbeds and relaxation areas. Do not look for classic medical treatments known from Czech spas here.

The curative water in the Győr spa has a positive effect on the treatment of the musculoskeletal system, chronic inflammation of joints and muscles, and gynaecological problems. However, the spa staff reminds visitors that the curative effects of the Győr spa are fully realised only after a week-long stay.

The water from the Győr thermal baths also has positive effects on a person’s psyche. Active rest in warm water invigorates the body and mind, relieving the head from the stress of everyday life. Furthermore, warm water heats the organism, speeds up metabolism, and increases blood circulation in the limbs.

However, let us not forget that thermal water is not for everyone. The Győr thermal baths are not suitable for the following types of people:

• With acute inflammation.

The water in the Győr thermal baths

The springs at Rába Quelle Győr Spa emerge from a depth of 2,000 meters at a temperature of 67 °C. The water takes advantage of the characteristics of the Moson-Danube and Rába rivers, which meet in Győr. Each carries a unique mineral structure that contributes to the water’s therapeutic properties.

The water has a high content of bicarbonate and chloride. It is also enriched with a large amount of iodine, thanks to which it has been inscribed on the list of iodine medicinal waters.

Pools at Rába Quelle Győr Spa

From June 2023, visitors can look forward to newly reconstructed pools with modern facilities. Nine outdoor and indoor pools with thermal water will open to visitors.

The main highlights are three medicinal pools operating all year round. The star medicinal pool, simulating a night-sky atmosphere, creates a pleasant ambiance. It is ably countered by the medicinal pool with a chessboard right in the middle of the water surface, and the classic large medicinal pool.

Not only children will enjoy five adventure pools. They feature artificial waterfalls, water slides, massage jets, and other attractions. There is also an adventure pool with a swim-up bar, where you can refresh yourself with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks right in the water.

A children’s pool for up to six years old is prepared for the little ones. Here, they can play with their own toys and slide down a small slide. On dry land, children can enjoy the children’s play corner, which is part of the complex.

Saunas at Győr Thermal Baths

The sauna world at Győr Spa is located on two floors. On the first floor, there is a spacious outdoor garden with a relaxation environment. Regular sauna sessions are held in the two Finnish saunas, which are accompanied by a cold plunge pool and a shower.

The second floor offers visitors two infrared saunas, three Finnish saunas, a steam, solar, and salt cabin. Next to them, you will find a heated bench and a spacious rest area.

The sauna world is subject to several rules:

• No entry for persons under 14 years of age.
• No consumption of food and drinks.

Rába Quelle Győr Spa allows the purchase of several types of admission. The price list, like other thermal spas in Hungary, distinguishes between admission on weekdays and on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.

In addition to all-day admission, the price list also includes more favourable three-hour tickets. However, in this case, watch the clock. For every commenced hour, you will pay 400 Ft extra.

Seniors and students will be happy with a visit to the Győr spa. A special price list offers discounted prices for these groups. In this case, the spa considers men over 65 and women over 62 as seniors. Students must present a valid student ID upon entry.

But don’t close your wallet yet. The sauna world has a special admission fee. Admission to the sauna garden costs 2500 Ft on Saturday, Sunday, and holidays and 1900 Ft on weekdays. The sauna session itself costs 500 Ft. Special packages offer discounted admission to the sauna and spa.

As everywhere else, you will also pay extra for a locker – it costs 200 Ft, but the price is only valid during the season from June to August. If you do not bring your own towel, its rental will cost you 700 Ft, and expect a refundable deposit.

You can pay in the spa area with a contactless payment card or in cash. The staff accepts both the euro and Hungarian forint currencies. The only place where you cannot do without cash is the swim-up bar, which, for logical reasons, only accepts cash.

The Győr thermal baths in Hungary are open all year round, including Sundays and holidays. The spa sets opening hours during holidays, especially Christmas and Easter, individually. Therefore, inquire about the opening hours during Hungarian holidays in advance.

Accommodation Options at Rába Quelle Győr Spa and Surrounding Area

Rába Quelle Győr Spa has its own accommodation option. It is the four-star RQ Boutique & Unique Hotel located approximately 150 meters from the spa. The hotel provides 17 rooms, so guests have plenty of privacy and can look forward to rich buffet breakfasts.

On the other side of the Rába River is the Danubius Hotel Raba. This classic-style hotel impresses with its historic architecture. Inside the hotel, there is also a spacious pub with 25 types of Belgian beers and Hungarian cuisine. It is located approximately 1 km from the spa.

If you long for unconventional accommodation, visit Arany Szarvas Fogadó és Drakes Pub. The apartment accommodation is located in an unassuming cottage on an island on the Rába River. From the spacious rooms, you will have a breathtaking view directly of the Bishop’s Castle in the city centre. It is approximately 280 meters to the spa.

Visitor Reviews and Experiences

It must be said at the outset that the reviews and experiences of visitors are based on visits to the Győr spa before the reconstruction. Current visitor experiences may therefore differ.

Customer reviews praise the Győr thermal bath and its friendliness towards children. Given its location near the Czech Republic, guests feel at home here. According to them, the spa is more for fun, and you won’t enjoy much swimming here.

On the other hand, you have to expect higher attendance, which translates into longer queues and crowded pools. Some visitor reviews also complain about a lack of towels for rent and the number of sunbeds.

A Pleasant Stay in the Town of Győr

Hungary’s eighth-largest city does not only offer the Rába Quelle Győr Spa. The historic city is located at the strategic confluence of two Hungarian rivers, and has therefore witnessed many historical turning points.

However, a large part of the city is made up of tourism. Tourist attractions certainly include the historic city centre, the zoo, Káptalan Hill with the Bishop’s Castle, and the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Also worth mentioning is Royal Street with Napoleon’s House, which exudes the atmosphere of the Old Town in Prague.

A stay at the Győr thermal baths will be enjoyed by families with children and older holidaymakers. Accommodation is located close to the spa, and admission is more than pleasant. Thanks to the ongoing modernization, guests can also look forward to visiting thermal baths that rank among the most beautiful thermal baths in Europe.

The city of Győr is also a city of various festivals and celebrations. Ballet (Győr Ballet, National Theatre, Győr Philharmonic) is particularly popular here.
