Where is the Lukacs Spa located?
The Hungarian metropolis hides a treasure in the depths of the earth beneath the city jungle in the form of approximately 120 thermal springs. This is a huge wealth that local spa facilities have been utilizing for centuries. The spa tradition here has roots reaching back to the Roman era, but paradoxically, Budapest owes its greatest expansion to its conquerors – the Ottoman Turks.
Some facilities that still operate today were built by the Ottomans precisely during this time. Perhaps the most famous example is the ancient Rudas Baths with its very strong atmosphere. The Király Baths offer a similar authentic spirit.
Among the other most famous complexes are the Széchenyi Baths or the Gellért Baths. In both cases, these are larger and very elegant complexes with huge attendance and renown. Under the open sky, you can bathe in the well-known Palatinus thermal bath on the charming Margaret Island on the Danube. But the possibilities are much more numerous…

The Lukacs Baths belong among spas with very ancient roots; at the same time, however, they are modernized to a certain extent, so they do not offer such raw authenticity as Rudas or Király. On the other hand, it is a spa with a very pleasant, quiet atmosphere. Less busy than the large complexes and in a relaxing spirit.
The spa is located on Frankel Leó Street – in an area with lots of greenery and parks, just a short distance from the Danube bank at the point of the Margaret Bridge leading to the aforementioned island. It is therefore the true spa core of the city. It is not far from here to the historical center either – the famous Fisherman’s Bastion lies approximately 2 km as the crow flies to the south.

History and Present of the Lukacs Baths
The Lukacs Baths lie at the foot of the low Szemlő Hill – at a place where thermal springs are found, which were already used by the ancient Romans. The Romans also left us written mentions of these springs. In the Middle Ages, in the 12th century, knightly orders dedicated to healing (Hospitallers, Knights of Malta and Rhodes) subsequently settled here and built a spa and a hospital. During the Ottoman rule, the Turks took the initiative again. In their times, a thermal bathing lake likely lay at the site of the spa.

After the defeat of the Turks and during the 18th century, the significance of the spa rather declined. A mention of a small folk spa with several vats used mainly by incoming rural farmers dates back to 1852. In 1857, however, a certain miller began the construction of a somewhat “better” area. In 1884, a certain Fülöp Palotay continued the expansion of the spa. And as early as 1893, the spa had a modern flair; it became a joint-stock company, and a spa hotel, medical clinic, steam bath, and other equipment were established here.
Until the opening of the magnificent Gellért Baths at the beginning of the 20th century, the Lukacs Baths were considered the most modern and popular in Budapest and were visited by foreign guests and patients as well. In 1937, a newly built drinking hall was opened. During the following Second World War, however, the spa was seriously damaged. In the following decades, it saw repairs and renovation, and its position as an important Budapest spa stabilized. In 2013, an extensive, years-long reconstruction was completed, for which the spa also received the significant Hungarian ICOMOS award.
Regarding the architectural concept, the spa appears quite inconsistent, carrying elements from various periods. More distinct ancient elements have, however, been taken by time, and the current form mostly bears a look based on plans from the 1920s. Thus, the spirit of late Art Nouveau and eclecticism prevails.

Thanks to this, the spa has a special casual elegance, and because it is synergistically connected with a park and lots of greenery, it creates an almost magical corner with a wonderful atmosphere.
What is treated in the spa?
The Lukacs Baths utilize a thermal spring originating from the Molnár János cave, which is 6 km long and 30 m deep. The water contains chlorides, sodium, calcium, potassium, hydrogen carbonate, or carbonic acid and other components. The total mineral content is around 1,300 mg per liter, which (according to the Czech standard) ranks it among medium-mineralized waters.
This water has proven positive effects on degenerative joint diseases, arthritis, spinal deformities, disc herniations, or calcium deficits and other problems with the musculoskeletal system. Drinking cures are also used for stomach and gallbladder diseases, as well as for some kidney diseases.

Spa Facilities – Pools, Wellness, Sports, and Treatment
The Lukacs Baths offer quality equipment for relaxation, treatment, but also, for example, lighter sports activities and, of course, for wellness experiences.

The men’s pool is 22 °C and the women’s is 26 °C.
Other equipment includes a cooling pool with a temperature of 20 °C or a Kneipp path consisting of small pools with a structured bottom and different temperatures for gentle hardening and stimulation of blood circulation.

Other Equipment and Services
The spa also offers wellness and spa services in the form of various types of massages, but also relaxing, regenerative, and other baths. A fundamental part of the spa is, of course, the spa and medical clinic with an offer of therapeutic programs and procedures. These include:

Summary and Evaluation of the Review
The Lukacs Baths can be ranked among the top ten, possibly even the TOP five Budapest thermal baths. They are located somewhere on the boundary between very traditional to rawly authentic baths and more modern complexes. They please with an enchanting environment overgrown with greenery and above-average peace. The baths are not as busy as other well-known complexes, and visitors scatter quite well in the relatively rich space.
The spa has a high rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars on Google. They are most popular among the older generations, which enhances the quiet atmosphere. From the outside, the spa does not look particularly “noble,” but it is very clean and maintained; the service and services are at a top level. Combined with a very favorable entrance price, these are baths that well represent Budapest’s spa culture and definitely have something to offer.
