Sárvár Thermal Baths, Hungary

The Hungarian town of Sárvár and its thermal baths are located in the western part of the country, near the border with neighbouring Austria. Sárvár Thermal Spa is visited annually by thousands of tourists who seek the healing effects of the local water, which is rich in sodium. What sets this spa apart from dozens of other Hungarian thermal baths?

The best way to travel to the Hungarian Sárvár thermal baths is by car. From Prague, the drive takes just under five hours. You have a choice of two routes: either travel via Mikulov and Vienna or continue from Brno to Břeclav and Bratislava. Both routes are approximately the same length, and the choice depends on your preference.

A Traditional Spa Town: Sárvár

The town of Sárvár is located in Vas County. Over 15,000 inhabitants live here, making Sárvár the capital of the district of the same name. Healing water was discovered here in 1961, and the construction of the extensive spa centre began in the same year. If you hear Czech spoken in the town, don’t be surprised – Sárvár Thermal Spa is popular among Czech tourists.

Sárvár is known for more than just its thermal baths. The town is famous for its historic centre with the Nádasdy family castle. Besides the castle, the town offers other activities:

  • Rope park
  • Botanical garden with an arboretum
  • Traditional Hungarian restaurants and cafes

Less than 30 kilometres from the town are other Hungarian thermal baths. Bükfürdő Spa attracts thousands of tourists annually thanks to its extensive pool complex.

Tranquility for Patients and Fun for Families with Children

The Sárvár Thermal Spa complex is divided into several sectors. It provides ample space for family fun with children and privacy for patients receiving effective treatment.

The complex includes a therapeutic section with medical procedures, an extensive sauna world with Finnish saunas, a steam bath, and a Kneipp pool. All areas are carefully separated to prevent mixing of patients with recreational visitors.

Healthy Water with High Sodium Content

The healing effects of the water in Sárvár thermal baths help people with musculoskeletal problems, gynaecological issues, and skin diseases. The spa draws water from two springs:

  • The first is located at a depth of 1,200 metres and has a temperature of 43°C
  • The second hot spring is heated to a temperature of 83°C and is found 2,000 metres below the surface.

Thanks to the high sodium content, the famous Sárvár Thermal Crystal Salt is obtained from the water through evaporation. The thermal spa uses this salt in its healing therapies. In addition to the diseases mentioned above, the salt baths also treat:

  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Soft tissue rheumatism
  • Asthma
  • Climacteric syndrome

Due to the highly mineral composition of the water, the baths are not suitable for all patients. Patients suffering from heart and respiratory weakness, thrombosis and venous diseases, and pregnant women should consider consulting a doctor.

Admission – Sárvár Thermal Spa

Admission to the Sárvár thermal baths is dual, depending on the date of your visit to Hungary. The spa distinguishes between seasonal and off-season pricing. Seasonal days, however, are more frequent than you might think:

  • Every Friday, Saturday, Sunday
  • January 2 to March 15
  • April 19 to June 6
  • June 18 to August 31
  • October 1 to November 1
  • December 21 to December 31

The price difference between the season and off-season is only a matter of a few euros. A pleasant fact is that the spa differentiates the price of a family ticket based on the number of children. Children under three years old also have free admission to the spa.

Naturally, other special services are paid. Entry to the sauna world costs approx. 6,16 € for the whole day. But remember — only children over 12 years old are allowed in the sauna area. You can find the full price list on the website.

Summary of review

Sárvár Thermal Spa is one of the most visited Hungarian baths. It is easily accessible by car from surrounding countries – the journey takes approximately five hours from Prague. Compared to other thermal spas, Sárvár is more expensive – but the difference is not significant. The pool facilities and the cleanliness of the area are of an excellent standard, and the thermal baths are suitable for families with children and ailing patients. All of them have the opportunity to experience the healing effects of the two hot springs.
