Where are the Thermen & Badewelt Sinsheim thermal baths located?

Sinsheim is mentioned, few locals would probably even know where such a place lies on the map, let alone be able to name a reason to visit it. Yet, German Sinsheim is definitely a place worth visiting for a trip—at least if you consider yourself a lover of thermal baths and have high standards.

If you decide to head to Sinsheim, you will have to travel all the way to the western edge of Germany, where the city nestles in the foothills of the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) mountains, known primarily for the excellent dry-cured ham traditionally produced there.

Sinsheim lies in a picturesque hilly landscape and has about 35,000 inhabitants. While it is a nice town, it cannot be said to be exceptionally extraordinary—that is, unless you turn south from the center. Here, behind a grey industrial zone, lie two fairly significant facilities. One is the massive PreZero Arena sports stadium with over 30,000 seats, and the second is the equally megalomaniac thermal spa complex, Thermen & Badewelt Sinsheim.

This is not just any ordinary thermal bath, but a spa that is unique in many respects, even by German standards. It can be worth the journey just for the baths themselves.

Another option is to make a detour to the spa if you are on a trip or visiting cities like Stuttgart or Frankfurt, which are famous for their beautiful monuments or Christmas markets. Or if you are on your way to France, Luxembourg, or Belgium.

Transport Accessibility

The thermal baths in Sinsheim boast perfect transport accessibility. They are located practically right next to the E50 European first-class road, which leads from Ukraine through the Czech Republic to the French port of Brest. There are bus stops directly at the spa, served by a number of lines from the center of Sinsheim and surrounding towns. Thanks to the presence of the arena, there are also huge parking areas, charging stations for electric vehicles, and other facilities.

The Thermen & Badewelt Sinsheim thermal complex is a project of the Wund Holding company, operating under the name Thermengruppe Josef Wund, founded by the famous German architect Josef Wund. This group is responsible for other opulent spa complexes of European significance. These include, for example, the huge Therme Bucharest, which is among the largest in Europe, and many other projects.

The Largest Sauna in the World

Construction of the Sinsheim spa began in 2011, and the complex was opened to the public the following year. Costs reached an estimated 50 million EUR, and the complex covers a total area of around 164,000 m². In 2013, the spa even earned an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest sauna in the world (the Koi sauna), which, with an area of 166 m², can hold up to 150 people. In 2015, the world sauna championships were also held in the spa’s sauna world. Today, of course, there are even larger saunas.

Artificial Beach like the Maldives and a Tropical Rainforest

In 2019, another important “upgrade” arrived. The Palm Paradise zone, simulating a tropical paradise, was expanded to include a beach with a fascinating area of 2,000 m². There are about 1,100 tons of real beach sand on the beach. The beach is decorated with 60 palm trees imported from Spain.

Other tropical vegetation is found in other places as well, especially in the interior with a zone resembling a real tropical forest lagoon. In total, there are over 460 live palm trees in the complex and plenty of other plants, including about a thousand orchids.

Palm Paradise (Palmenparadise) – A Tropical Paradise in Germany

The Thermen & Badewelt Sinsheim spa consists of several separate zones with different thematic focuses. The most prominent part is undoubtedly “Palm Paradise.”

The indoor area is exceptionally vast and entirely situated in a practically completely glass building. The roof is also glass and, moreover, can be fully opened, so in good weather, the indoor area becomes an outdoor one, and you swim directly under the open sky. When necessary, the roof closes, and nothing spoils your tropical idyll. Inside, the temperature is always 32 °C. The water in the lagoon is 34 °C.

Regarding the pools, the heart of the area is a huge central lagoon, intricately shaped with many peninsulas and water or massage features. In the lagoon, there are 53 water loungers with bubble massages, and 4 whirlpools are built into it. The lagoon is surrounded by a tropical forest, and there is also a fantastic tropical bar with cocktails.

The indoor part is connected to an outdoor area where there are large pools with fountains, an artificial current, and other water features, along with terraces with loungers. The pool section is followed by a huge lake, where you will find the mentioned sandy beach with loungers and umbrellas, as well as luxury canopy beds, piers, and a beach bar. The entire lake is well over 100 meters wide (covering 10,000 m²) and you can even ride a pedal boat on it. It is truly a magnificent work.

Other facilities in this zone include three therapeutic pools with lithium, Dead Sea salt, or selenium. Furthermore, you can enjoy a steam bath, an infrared sauna, and many other facilities, programs, or events held here regularly and occasionally. In short, a fantastic affair at the level of an ultra-luxury tropical resort. And only a few hours by car from the Czech border.

In total, you will find up to 16 different pools in the spa.

Sauna World and Vitality Spa

Another zone is the Vitality spa and spa zone, focused on relaxation, treatment, regeneration, and pampering of all kinds.

In this zone, you will find 13 saunas, and you can enjoy various wellness and spa procedures, rest in beautiful relaxation zones, and more. Let’s look at some specific saunas you will find here.

In the stunning sauna village, you can try, for example, the Alpenglück mountain sauna. In this dry log cabin sauna, the temperature is around 80 °C. Furthermore, there are several stylish saunas in giant wine barrels with beautiful views. These saunas have temperatures of 60°, 65°, and 70 °C.

No less unique is the Freya sauna ship. In this panoramic sauna swaying on the waves, the temperature is 75 °C. Another sauna is a wooden barn sauna. In this rural, rustic sauna, it is already 90 °C, and it is complemented by a blacksmith’s forge.

The pride of the spa is the aforementioned Koi sauna. The sauna is partially submerged under water, so you can watch the bustle of koi carp. The sauna is in Japanese style and is typically 75 °C. A beautiful atmosphere with ambient lighting is also offered by the Euphoria sauna (80 °C), and a remarkable environment is provided by the Hünenring sauna (80 °C) with rock formations in the style of Stonehenge.

Furthermore, there is a tropical sauna, a Vienna-style coffee house sauna, an Oriental-themed Alhambra sauna, a cinema sauna with projections, and a Vital Mist steam bath. Refreshment pools for after saunaring are not missing. There is also a sensory path, a solarium, an infrared cabin, and so on. A great feature is the LivingGarden pool bar, and there is also a Frooters fruit bar.

Sports Zone

The Thermen & Badewelt Sinsheim baths also think of athletes. For them, a large swimming pool is available. It is 25 meters long with 6 swimming lanes, and there are also 1 and 3-meter diving boards. The water temperature is a refreshing 26 °C, and the pool reaches a depth of up to 3.56 m.

The pool is located in a separate area which, unlike the rest of the spa, is not particularly “fancy.” It is a functional part of the complex where you can simply swim for fitness.
