Thousands of years of spa history in Baden-Baden

Baden-Baden has a long history dating back to the Roman era. It was the Romans who built the first spa facilities near the local mineral springs. After the fall of the empire, the local spa industry declined for centuries. It wasn’t until the 18th century that the baths experienced a renaissance, and by the 19th century, they had developed into one of the most important spa towns in Central Europe.

Baden-Baden is filled with spa and wellness hotels. However, the Caracalla Therme is among the most important public complexes. The name “Caracalla” refers back to Roman tradition. It was allegedly the Emperor of this name, ruling at the beginning of the 3rd century AD, who was responsible for the greatest flourish of spa culture in this territory.

Caracalla Therme is not among the largest thermal complexes. With approximately 5,000 m², it is a relatively intimate complex. Nevertheless, you don’t have to worry about missing anything. The spa is perfectly equipped and boasts a wonderful environment.

The spa was built in 1985 but is maintained with German precision, making it perfectly clean and impressive. The heart is a circular “temple” in an ancient style with Roman columns and statues. There are outdoor and indoor pools, a sauna world, and much more.

The spa utilizes Baden mineral water, which contains over 3,000 dissolved minerals. At over 68°C, it is the warmest spring in this part of Germany. The spring rises from a depth of 2 km and is particularly rich in fluoride salts, giving it a slightly salty taste. Overall, it is classified as highly mineralized water.

It has a positive effect on the cardiovascular system, metabolic disorders, and musculoskeletal diseases, and is excellent for stress reduction. Studies have shown that a significant drop in cortisol (the stress hormone) occurs after just 25 minutes in the water.

Summary and Overall Review

Caracalla Therme has a high Google rating of 4.1 out of 5 stars. Guests most often praise the beautiful spa environment, which is ideal for relaxation and wonderfully illuminated in the evening. The atmosphere of the spa is truly unique. Cleanliness is frequently highlighted, although in some places—despite good maintenance—the passage of time is noticeable, and a more thorough, comprehensive renovation would be welcome.

The spa is relatively small, but this is generally not seen as a negative, as the complex has a very distinctive, intimate charm and offers everything one might need. The sauna world, in particular, is opulent and beautifully designed.

The spa is primarily aimed at an adult clientele. During busier times, it can be quite crowded and noisy, but overall it is a spa well worth visiting.
